President's Message

Happy Holidays and "hello December".  In medieval times, starvation was common in winter immediately following December. It was about this time of year that the midwinter festival was held (similar to Thanksgiving), before deep winter began. Most cattle were slaughtered so they would not have to be fed during the winter, so it was a rare time of year when a supply of fresh meat was available. The majority of wine and beer made during the year was finally fermented and ready for drinking at this time.  We all should give thanks to whatever higher powers exist for Hy-Vee, modern heating, electricity and safe transportation...at least I am!

Regarding BOMA Iowa, welcome Tricia Matthies from Hubbell Realty Company and Karen Goldsworth from Strauss Security Systems to the 2014 board.  Also, thanks to Krista Capp from Hubbell for her seven-year service, leadership and guidance on the board.  Krista is flat-out one of the best writers I've known who wasn't employed by GQ Magazine...her President's Messages were always insightful and contained great humor.  Also, thanks to Craig Clabaugh for his creative and committed two-year leadership stint as Social Chair; BOMA Iowa had some great golf outings, drop-in parties and a really fun and successful holiday party at Exile.

If you haven't renewed your BOMA Iowa membership, now is the time!  We are freezing (another December reference) our membership dues for another year to help companies with the expense.  Hopefully the advocacy, education and social functions are worth it for you and your company.  Contact either Kate Miller (2013 Membership Chair) or Scott Cooley (2014 Membership Chair) for any membership questions or if you know someone who should be a part of BOMA Iowa (K.Cline@dkres.com or cooley.scott@rrrealty.com).

Now, the "Swan Song"...some of you remember that I was President of BOMA Iowa the first time in 1999.  I succeeded some great mentors and leaders like Kurt Larsen, Katie Turner, Bob Dove, Steve Coleman, Ray Spriggs and many, many others.  When I started on the board as Member at Large for the first time in 1993, I was 27 years old (Dean O'Connor and I had dark hair back then!).  I didn't know what I didn't know, but I was guided by bright, patient and honorable people.

Thanks to Jana Morgan and the BOMA Iowa board from 6 years ago who listened to me grovel, and they nominated me to the BOMA Iowa board for a second time.  Time has flown by and now I'm 47 years old, and I probably still don't know what I don't know.  However, the conventions, the contacts, the education, the great friends and the memories are a gift that I'll always treasure, and I am truly grateful for BOMA Iowa's faith in me.  Along the way we fought for a freeze on membership dues on a national basis and won; we changed our luncheon venue to the Wakonda Club; approved Jon Kurth's initiative to host Building Engineers educational breakfasts; increased Membership (thanks Kate Miller!); listened to great speakers at our luncheons; and threw some awesome parties (thanks to Craig and the social committee)!  My first term on the board in the 1990's went by so fast that I truly appreciated this second time around even more.  Thanks to each of you for helping me to participate in that great ride.  Don't count me out for another run as BOMA Iowa president in 2027, but watch out...if you think I'm a bit off my rocker now, just think about what I might say in another 20 years!  Conversely, I'll need to save my pennies because the President's Message bribes will have to be increased to a crisp $10 bill!  Cheers and a very heartfelt thanks to you all!

Jeff Hatfield, Lame Duck President, BOMA Iowa
